A Dark Partnership: Myanmar’s Junta Finds a Friend in China

It’s hard to suppress the anger boiling inside me as I write this. Myanmar’s so-called government—a military regime that is anything but legitimate—continues to terrorize our people, inflicting unimaginable suffering on innocent civilians every day. This is not a government; it’s a dictatorship fueled by violence, oppression, and fear. And now, the junta is cozying up to China, seeking validation and support to continue its brutal reign. What’s happening in Myanmar is nothing less than a humanitarian nightmare, and the world must finally step up and help end this terror.

This week, Myanmar's junta leader, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, made his first visit to China since seizing power in a bloody coup in 2021. He meets with officials, smiles for the cameras, and discusses “mutual interests” with one of the few powers willing to engage with his oppressive regime. While they talk trade and economic cooperation, our people continue to suffer, our freedoms remain crushed, and our voices are silenced. It’s infuriating to see our dictator welcomed by a global power, treated with respect he has done nothing to deserve. Meanwhile, the world watches, reluctant to intervene as our country falls deeper into chaos and despair.

### A Brutal Regime Seeking Validation

Let’s make one thing clear: Myanmar’s military junta should never be recognized as a legitimate government. Since the coup, they’ve unleashed a reign of terror across the nation—airstrikes on villages, indiscriminate arrests, torture, and murder of anyone who dares to resist. They have made life a living hell for millions, displacing entire communities, silencing the press, and destroying any semblance of democracy we once had. This is not a government representing its people; this is a group of power-hungry generals willing to sacrifice innocent lives to maintain their grip on power.

And now, the junta is turning to China for support, a move that should anger everyone who believes in basic human rights and dignity. China’s willingness to engage with the junta provides them with a degree of legitimacy that they do not deserve. Every handshake, every deal made between these two powers is a slap in the face to every Myanmar citizen who has suffered under this regime’s brutality. Instead of standing with the oppressed, China is empowering the oppressor, ignoring the plight of our people for the sake of political and economic gains.

### What’s Happening in Myanmar Deserves Global Attention

For years now, Myanmar has cried out for help, and yet the international response has been shamefully inadequate. Economic sanctions have been imposed here and there, statements of condemnation have been issued, but nothing substantial has been done to truly challenge the junta’s stranglehold on power. Meanwhile, the people of Myanmar continue to bear the brunt of this inaction. Hospitals have been bombed, activists are in hiding, and children grow up in a country where hope feels like a distant dream.

The international community cannot continue to ignore what’s happening in Myanmar. The world must recognize that this is not a civil government—it’s a dictatorship using every weapon at its disposal to maintain control over a population that rejects it. By allowing China and other nations to offer support and recognition to the junta, we are sending a dangerous message: that power gained through violence and oppression will be tolerated. It’s a betrayal of Myanmar’s people and of the principles of human rights and freedom.

### Myanmar’s People Deserve More Than Empty Words

The people of Myanmar have shown unimaginable resilience. They have protested, organized, and resisted in every way they can, despite knowing the risks. They have sacrificed their safety, their homes, and their lives to stand against this brutal regime. But their courage can only carry them so far. We need more than empty words of solidarity. We need real, tangible action from the international community. We need support that goes beyond sanctions and diplomatic statements. Myanmar’s people deserve a world that is willing to stand with them in their darkest hour, not a world that turns a blind eye as a dictator tightens his grip.

### The Time for Action Is Now

What’s happening in Myanmar cannot go on. We cannot allow a ruthless military junta to destroy our country, to crush our spirit, and to erase our dreams for freedom. The international community must intervene, not only to bring relief to Myanmar’s suffering people but to send a message to oppressive regimes everywhere that tyranny will not be tolerated. The longer we wait, the more lives will be lost, the deeper our wounds will become, and the harder it will be to heal from this tragedy.

Myanmar is crying out for help, and it’s time for the world to answer that call. It’s time for meaningful sanctions that target the junta’s resources, diplomatic efforts that isolate the regime, and humanitarian aid that reaches those in desperate need. It’s time to stand against the brutal dictatorship that has destroyed our lives and to stand with the people of Myanmar in their fight for justice and freedom.
